Chapter 12

After going through customs in Houston, there was very little time for Haley and Falon to catch their connecting flight. Instead of stealing a few kisses as Falon had hoped, they ran through the airport to their gate and boarded their plane at the last minute. Falon had to settle for a brief touch of Haley’s shoulder before she headed to the back of the plane and took her seat.

“You’ve been on vacation,” the older woman seated next to Falon said and pointed to her T-shirt that had the word Roatán printed over a sunset framed by palm trees. “I’ve never been there. That’s in Honduras, right?”

Falon nodded. “Yes, ma’am.”

“I always wanted to visit places outside of the U.S., but I married young. Before I knew it, I had three children, then one day, it seemed like I blinked, and they had all spawned at one time. Grandchildren were popping out everywhere, not that I don’t love them all, but there’s so many of them I can hardly keep up with their names, let alone their birthdays. Are you married?”

“No, ma’am,” Falon said and inwardly cursed her luck over being stuck with a motormouth.

The woman searched Falon’s face for a moment. “That’s why you look so fresh and happy. I need a drink, and I’m not talking about soda. I’ve been visiting my sister, and when I get home, I know it’s gonna be a disaster area. My husband thinks if he points the TV remote at a sink full of dirty dishes, something’s gonna happen. My son just moved back home with his brood, and I guaran-damn-tee you, my laundry room floweth over with dirty clothes. Hell, when I get to New Orleans, I might book myself a flight to Roatán and run away from home. I’m Sue by the way. Who’re you?”

Haley had gotten off the plane first in New Orleans and waited at the gate for Falon. When Falon joined her, she threw her arms around Haley and hugged her tightly. Haley surprised her with a quick kiss.

“Oh, that explains it,” Sue said as she dragged her carry-on missing one wheel past them. “I should’ve been a lesbian. Most women know the TV remote won’t do laundry or clean dishes.”

“What was that all about?” Haley asked.

“That was Sue. She lives in Kenner, she’s very unhappily married, and she’s half in the bag. She ordered quite a few drinks to prime herself for her homecoming. After five minutes of listening to her, I wanted to claw the window next to her out of the frame and climb out.”

Haley laughed. “You could’ve switched seats with me if you didn’t mind the guy next to it farting in his sleep. I hate flying.”

“Me too,” Falon agreed as they slowly made their way toward the main terminal. “I’m looking forward to finding out what else we have in common.”

“Me too,” Haley said distractedly when she spotted Cindy just beyond security waving her arms wildly.

Falon smiled. “That’s Cindy, right?”

“Yes,” Haley said and waved.
